Teams

People love their team sports.  In fact when we talk about teams in our professional lives, we use a lot of sports metaphors:  “Win one for the team” or making it to “the big leagues” with a promotion to management.  Those metaphors only take us so far though.  After a while, it becomes nothing more than talk.

Teaming in corporate America has become the norm over the last…wait.  The team concept is not something that was invented a decade ago. Yet, the explosion of books, research, websites and workshops on teaming that have emerged over the last ten years would make anyone believe it is a new way of working. ALL of us have been working in teams since kindergarten.  Sometimes that is part of the problem.

We have all had so many bad, terrible, awful, nightmarish, downright painful (pick your favorite adjective or add your own) that the idea of teaming sounds good on paper, but we all know that many people would rather just do the work on their own.

As long as organizations continue to accomplish their goals in teams, training and development surrounding how to team effectively will be in demand.  If your teaming experiences include confused goals, lack of leadership, missing organizational buy in for the teams success and reduced morale within the team, consider some of the Plan B programs that help you be a better team.
